my reasurch on the BBFC

Suitable only for 15 years and over

No one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ film in a cinema. No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video work.

Drugs

Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. The misuse of easily accessible and highly dangerous substances (for example, aerosols or solvents) is unlikely to be acceptable.

Horror

Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised.

Imitable behaviour

Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised.

Language

There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’). The strongest  terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable.

Nudity

Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context.

Sex

Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable.

Violence

Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification.

I have researched the guide lines of the BBFC. I have this so I know what will be accepted for each age rating. My film is based on the age rating of 15 years old, so I have looked into this age rating in more detail. I have found out that a lot is permitted but the stuff that is blocked is the thing that I don’t want to show.

Codes and Conventions

I researched the genre of the film that I’m making so I can have an idea of what should be expected  in the film. I'm doing my film about drugs and I found out that it would come under the genre crime and gangster or drug. I researched the genre and found out that it had some drug use, maybe some weapons used and there is also some bad language.

Here is a list of some more things that I found out.

Characters:
-         normally a male main character
-         a good accomplish normally male
-         an under dog normally the one who dies can be male or female

Setting:
-         in a city
-         back parts of town
-         in broken down parts of towns and cities

Story line:
-         A plan is made
-         Drug us might be involved at the start
-         Something bad has happened to the boss and he wants revenge
-         Bad things happen the other charters and the boss usually dies at the end

Props:
-         guns are normally in the film
-         hats, suits
-         cars , modified cars
-         maybe some cool weapons with special features

by doing this i have learnt more about my film that i am going to make. I am going to use some of this guide to help me make my film. This will help me make it as it has the key points of the film genre.

My film (target audience)

There are many ways of identifying the target audience. You can give them a series of questions about your film to tell if they are interested in the film or not. You can do this for any type of genre for any film. You can also make one to tell what type of things they like to do when watching films e.g. using there phones, eating and drinking and if the room is dark or bright.

Audience Research

I have chosen 17 – 40 as my target audience as it has drug use, drinking and scenes of sexual nature. These things wouldn’t be suitable for the younger ages such as 13 or 14. I know this because of some other films that I have watched are using the same things or very similar.

By doing an audience research this has helped me by know what the audience wants and how I should display it to them.

by taking this survey it will help me get an idea of what you like for a film

By making this survey it will show me what people like about the genre of film that I’m making. This will give me ideas in how to improve the film for everyone liking.

Memento opening 2 minutes for textual analysis

Genre Physiological Thriller

Sound
Violin, Cello, Perhaps a Piano?  Builds up over time, Music gets deeper, when title of the movie appears, the music sounds very depressing and sad. When time starts going back, the sounds cuts out to a small silent whistle. As the guy comes back to life if cuts out with a sort of THUD.

Camera shots Close up shot of his hand, moves in to his face, camera moves to what is moving on his body e.g. his arm, camera moves to items that have moved since the guy got shot e.g. glasses, bullet round and the dead guy

Characters Man on floor is dead, when we awakens he is shouting something, very little is known at this point, he wears glasses and has a beard, he is dressed as an average man, with a plain chequered t shirt, he looks around 35 - 40. The man who shoots the guy on the floor seems to be taking a photo of his victim, perhaps this is because he can prove the man is dead, and he is going to show the picture to someone? Maybe he is a bounty hunter? He has what looks like a scar? Or maybe blood on his face, and is dressed slightly more formal clothes than the dead guy, he looks slightly younger I’d say 30 – 35, this man is also wearing a wedding ring, so is most probably married.

Plot A man kills another man, maybe for revenge, maybe its job, it’s only the opening scene so you can’t be sure.

Other Notes
This film fits in as a physiological thriller as the opening is played backwards, and messes with your brain, this could also be a memory or a dream from one of the characters, which would be to do with the brain which is physiological.

A short plott of the film

Opening:

Establishing shot of the crack den, then the phone rings and there is a phone call about crack. There is then a parallel story about a dealer and the cooker who makes the crack. The dealer is sell some drugs and the cooker is making crack and is smoking. Then there is a shot of them both doing drugs. Mid close up of them waking up in the morning feeling not so good. The dealer calls the cooker to see if it is done. Then the dealer comes do to cookers door.

How we came up with the idea of the film

I researched many different types of genres and there was a lot. I looked into the ones i like most in more detail to help me later on. My group finally came up with the idea of a crime and gangster film. This seemed easy but will bring many challenges along the way.

By sitting in a group it was easy to share and get ideas from the other people. This made planning a lot easier. This has helped by doing things in groups and not trying to do every thing by my self.
